Introduction
COMPS is a Western Australia Centre of Excellence for MicroPhotonic Systems, part of the Electron Science Research Institute (ESRI) at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia.
Our mission is to provide the highly specialised technical know how and research needed to trigger a dynamic and vibrant MicroPhotonic industry to develop in Western Australia by facilitating high level collaboration between leading international research partners and by arranging access to state of the art research facilities.
We extend the photonic industry paradigm by integrating photonic devices
with leading edge silicon chip technology. COMPS is set to demonstrate
the integration of the following technologies to create MicroPhotonic systems:
- Opto Ultra Large Scale Integrated (Opto-ULSI) Processors;
- Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) Arrays;
- Photoreceiver Arrays; and
- Optical substrates accommodating these systems.
Our targeted MicroPhotonic products include:
- Intelligent lossless optical splitters;
- Reconfigurable high-speed optical interconnects;
- Multifunction processor realising simultaneously a tunable Optical Filter, a WDM Equaliser and an Optical Add/drop Multiplexer;
- Tunable Radio Frequency true-time delay units;
- MicroPhotonic RF signal processors; and
- MicroPhotonic Smart Antenna Beamformer
These products are key elements for many applications, such as broadband smart antennas, reconfigurable optical networking, adaptive RF signal processing, multi-port optical amplification, medical diagnostic tools, and many more. We are keen to hear from entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, researchers, early stage investors, or large corporations, interested in exploring and exploiting MicroPhotonic technologies for business-driven research, new product innovation and start-up initiatives worldwide.
